Last weekend, we did two Artists Brunches – where we ran a micro workshop with a group of visiting artists at the Ventnor fringe looking at how we can make more from what we do, to sustain our business, as well as our practice. It was such a thrill to go an see Stone Crabs one day performing Tieta, the Trial and to be chewing the fat about the challenges of creative business with Ines and Franco the next day. The same with Beck, Simon and Rebecca from Heady Conduct.
What’s always interesting is that wherever we can turn up where people are already, then we get to hear the real concerns, the real story about the challenges (and successes) of making creative businesses work. This time we also had two Spar Ladies, who are a writing duo of George and Jill, there to try out some early work, and getting inspired by others – can’t wait to see what they get to do.
The Fringe is as much an incubator of new thinking and discovery as anything that is formal or structured. We’ll be back next year to do more!
